Macro Topics Note

Iran and Oman are nearing agreement on Strait of Hormuz shipping arrangements, but Iran continues to tie reopening of the strait to extensive political and economic concessions from the United States. Escalating tensions, attacks on shipping infrastructure, and stalled negotiations with the US are pushing oil prices higher and increasing risks to Middle Eastern crude exports.

Guinea’s Simandou iron ore project could erode Australia’s export dominance while boosting Capesize shipping demand through longer-haul voyages to China. Geopolitical risks around the Strait of Hormuz are raising LNG prices, encouraging alternative Gulf export routes, and supporting longer-distance LNG shipping demand. Container freight rates appear to have found a near-term floor as strong global demand, port congestion, and Middle East disruptions continue to support the market.
