The Capesize/Newcastlemax market is experiencing a robust upturn, with average earnings up 96 per cent year-on-year, exceeding USD 40,000 per day. Supported by robust demand fundamentals, particularly from the Simandou project, expected to contribute an additional 40 Mn T of iron ore exports by 2027, the outlook for Capesize vessels remains favorable. However, with the orderbook at a historic low of 7.2 per cent of the fleet, the aging of existing vessels and geopolitical tensions, including ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, may impact future supply dynamics and necessitate caution moving forward. Demand has shifted towards coal, with projections indicating an increase of 40 to 60 Mn T due to reduced oil and gas supply, potentially resulting in persistent higher demand for bulk commodities.
