Global maritime fleet’s alternative-fuel capability sits at just 3 per cent of the trading fleet but 21 per cent of the orderbook, so adoption is almost entirely a newbuild phenomenon. Gas carriers lead by a wide margin – LNG carriers are 73.7 per cent alt-fuelled today and 96.6 per cent of their orderbook, with LPG at 12 per cent of fleet rising to 62.5 per cent on order – followed by containers, the fastest converter at 5.4 per cent of fleet but 35.9 per cent of orderbook. Tankers lag at 1.3 per cent of fleet and only 4.6 per cent of orderbook, having chosen scrubbers instead (14.2 per cent of fleet, 39.4 per cent of orderbook, with VLCC scrubber orders at 90.7 per cent), and chemical tankers have no alt-fuel orderbook at all despite 40 methanol ships trading. Bulkers are weakest, at 0.5 per cent of fleet and 4.3 per cent of orderbook – 75 LNG, 3 methanol and 1 biofuel vessel in total – with only Newcastlemax and VLOC showing meaningful uptake and scrubbers again the preferred route (17.3 per cent of fleet, 23.6 per cent of orderbook). RoRo sits between the two camps at 6.4 per cent of fleet and roughly half its orderbook.
