Four and a half years in, the Ukraine conflict appears as far from ending as ever. Moscow is officially open to a peace deal, but Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed on Saturday he had rejected “exotic in nature and unacceptable” ceasefire ideas sent by Kyiv via backchannels. Despite enduring massive losses, Moscow is betting that, through sheer force of numbers and rising war fatigue, it can wear Kyiv down. And on the face of it, there may be reasons for optimism in the Kremlin. On Tuesday, Mykhailo Fedorov, a longtime ally of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who was sacked as Defence Minister last month, released a video calling for parliamentary elections – something which Zelensky has been adamant cannot take place while the war is ongoing.
