A security deal is reached in Greenland, bringing hopes of diplomatic and commercial success.
On Friday, the US and Denmark announced a deal on Greenland’s security, the culmination of over a year of tensions instigated when US President Donald Trump threatened to take the island by force. NATO said that the deal would help bring stability to the region, and Trump said that Denmark would cede to the US “permanent control over security, and all other needs”. He also said that it contained a rule that no US adversary could keep a military presence in Greenland or “make sensitive investments in Greenland” without Washington’s approval. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that it “strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area” and recognised “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination”.
